About

Facsimile edition of a sketchbook by the architect Álvaro Siza. An exclusive piece, accompanied by a noble wooden box designed by Álvaro Siza.

In a folio notebook about 6 metres long, Álvaro Siza drew a narrative with biblical and mythological overtones, filled with unspeakable cruelty, tenderness and eroticism. It is this intimate notebook, filled with continuous lines, that Coral Books is reproducing, entirely constructed by hand, with collages, and housed in a noble wooden box, designed and built with materials selected by Álvaro Siza himself.

The drawing is accompanied by a text by Siza Vieira himself, as well as texts by Bernardo Pinto de Almeida, art critic and historian, and Enrico Baleri, the ‘father’ of Italian design. The box was built by SPSS, which is responsible for designing furniture for Portugal's leading designers and architects.

Álvaro Siza (1933)

Álvaro Siza is a renowned Portuguese architect, widely celebrated for his poetic and minimalist approach to design. Born in 1933 in Matosinhos, Portugal, Siza's work often reflects a deep connection to the natural environment, historical contexts, and the landscapes in which his buildings are situated. His architectural style merges modernist principles with a sensitivity to the vernacular, creating spaces that feel both timeless and grounded in their surroundings. Siza's ability to blend simplicity with elegance, while emphasizing the relationship between form and function, has made him a pivotal figure in contemporary architecture.

Throughout his illustrious career, Siza has created iconic structures across the world, including the famous Leça Swimming Pools, the Boa Nova Tea House, and the Church of Santa Maria in Marco de Canaveses. His work often explores fluid, organic forms, which contrast with traditional, rigid architectural styles. His contribution to architecture has earned him numerous awards, including the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 1992. Siza's legacy is marked by a unique ability to design buildings that evoke a sense of serenity and harmony, making him one of the most respected architects of his generation.
