About

This leaflet was published on the occasion of Tacita Dean's exhibition, held at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art from 30 November 2001 to 3 March 2002. It is a special edition of 150 copies, hand-signed, numbered and dated by Tacita Dean.

It is printed on both sides and folded like a concertina publication. First edition of this artist's book/exhibition catalogue featuring images from Dean's film of the sunset in Madagascar and reproducing a resulting optical illusion. This exhibition showcased Dean's exploration of natural optical phenomena, particularly the elusive "green ray"—a fleeting green flash that occurs just after sunset or before sunrise under specific atmospheric conditions.

Tacite Dean (1965)

Tacita Dean is a British visual artist renowned for her work in film, drawing, and photography. Born in 1965, she gained international recognition for her use of 16mm film, a medium she employs to capture time, chance, and the ephemeral nature of landscapes and human presence. Her films often have a meditative quality, focusing on subtle movements, shifting light, and decaying environments. Dean’s work is deeply rooted in themes of memory, history, and the passage of time, with an emphasis on the analog process in an increasingly digital world.

Beyond film, Dean explores drawing, printmaking, and large-scale chalkboard works, all of which reflect her fascination with chance and impermanence. Her interest in storytelling often leads her to examine historical figures, such as the German writer W.G. Sebald and the British poet John Keats, infusing her work with a literary and poetic sensibility. In recent years, she has expanded her practice to include monumental multi-panel photographic works, as seen in Quarantania (2018). Dean’s commitment to preserving analog film has made her a significant voice in contemporary art, advocating for the continued use of traditional filmmaking techniques in an era dominated by digital media.

Condition: Good overall condition (Integrity and authenticity).

Provenance: Acquired private collection (Portugal). Ownership: Monginho Collection.
