About
Retrospective exhibition of the French painter couple Sonia and Robert Delaunay, which, marking the emotional connection of both artists to Portugal, owed much to Sonia Delaunay's expressed wish to see her work presented in the galleries of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation alongside her husband's work.
Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979)
Sonia Delaunay was a groundbreaking French artist and designer, known for her vibrant, colorful works and her pioneering role in the Orphism art movement. Born Sarah Stern in Odessa, Ukraine, she moved to St. Petersburg at a young age, where she was adopted by her wealthy uncle, Henri Terk, and took on the name Sonia Terk. She later moved to Paris, where she would become an influential figure in the art world.
In Paris, Sonia was immersed in the avant-garde scene and became acquainted with artists such as Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. In 1908, she married German art dealer Wilhelm Uhde, which was more of a marriage of convenience to help her stay in Paris. However, she later met and fell in love with the French painter Robert Delaunay, whom she married in 1910.
Together, Sonia and Robert developed the Orphism movement, characterized by its use of strong colors and geometric shapes to create a sense of rhythm and movement. Sonia's work extended beyond painting to include textiles, fashion, and interior design, where she applied the principles of Orphism to everyday objects.
Robert Delaunay (1885-1941)
Robert Delaunay (1885-1941) was a French painter best known for his pioneering contributions to the development of abstract art, particularly through his role in the Orphism movement, which he co-founded. Delaunay's work focused on the use of color and light to evoke movement and dynamic energy, moving away from traditional representational art. His style evolved from a keen interest in Post-Impressionism and Symbolism, eventually embracing a more radical approach to abstraction.
Delaunay's most iconic works explore the relationships between color and form, often using vibrant, circular motifs and overlapping planes of color to suggest the interplay of light and atmosphere. One of his most famous series is the Discs or Circular Forms, which explored the optical effects of color and light, reminiscent of the scientific theories of color perception and the work of artists like Paul Cézanne and Georges Seurat.
In addition to his artistic accomplishments, Delaunay's work was influenced by his personal life, including his close partnership with fellow artist Sonia Delaunay, whom he married in 1910. Together, they created a powerful collaborative force in early 20th-century modernism, with Sonia focusing on textile design and Robert exploring the potential of visual abstraction.
